Arkeo Tour arose from an idea of a group of young Andalusian and Madrid lovers of their History, their culture and their heritage. Our team is made up of great professionals with extensive experience in managing tourist groups and cultural visits in different places in Spain. Most of us have been trained on the street, collaborating in different archaeological sites, art galleries and museums. We consider that our land has great heritage and cultural potential that should be valued by both residents and tourists. We do not believe that transmitting our History is a hassle. We want you to enjoy. May you live the experience. And may you soak up the vestiges of our past. Sign up for this adventure!
You are about to discover the capital of Menorca. Not everything will be beautiful coves and rich gastronomy! Now it's time for a bit of culture.
Did you know that fantastic legends run through the streets of Mahón? Or that among its mansions there are still ghosts of old merchants and corsairs that remind us that the city was sacked by Barbarossa himself in the 16th century?
Now with Arkeo Tour® you have the opportunity to discover one of its most important historical moments. Remember that throughout the 18th century Menorca was under the rule of Great Britain for more than seventy years.
We want to explore with you the vestiges of the British imprint in the city of Mahón!
We will begin our visit at Plaça de s'Esplanada to discover some of the most important buildings of the time: Els Quarters, built to prevent the accommodation of troops in private homes. We will visit the Town Hall, from the 17th century, but renovated in 1789 in a French baroque style. Did you know that the clock in its tower was imported from England around 1731? We will also visit the Principal de la Guardia, intended for the guard quartering during British rule. And, of course, the Palau del Gobernador, where Governor Richard Kane settled when in 1722 he decided to move the capital of the island from Ciudadela to Mahón.
We will go into its streets and squares, we will get to know the Quintana Gran, the old market, Plaça Vella or Hannover street, and we will show you how the British presence is still appreciated today in many of the details of its architecture, with elements such as the windows guillotine or in the so-called boínders (balconies closed with glass that, precisely, take the name of the English bow window ).
Did you know that incorporating the color red on the facades as a decorative element is a common feature in civil buildings, which has been called English colonial architecture?
Dare to take this tour of Mahón, where the British atmosphere is still breathed in each of its corners!
And above all, be sure to try the Gin Xoriguer, a gin made in Mahón since the 18th century. Some Mahon artisans decided to start making it since the sailors and soldiers could not find gin in the bars on the island.
Book your place now in British Mahón with Arkeo Tour®.
Only groups of up to 6 people are allowed in this activity. If you are 7 or more people, you will be asked for a payment per person in advance to join the visit.
