I am a teacher and Official Tourism Guide (nº GT/06338 of the Tourism Registry of the Junta de Andalucía); Doctor in Art and Humanities, with the thesis "Jerez and al-Andalus. From the origins to the Almohad era, territory, population and intellectual life", qualified with outstanding "cum laude"; Master's Degree in Historical-Archaeological Heritage; and a degree in Semitic and Hispanic Philology from the University of Granada, where I also studied Aramaic, History of the Jews in the Middle Ages and Sephardic Language and Literature. Do you know of a better guide to delve into the Muslim and Jewish past of Jerez de la Frontera?
Jerez is world famous for its wines, horses and flamenco, a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.
However, our city also has another lesser-known, but equally important, historical-artistic heritage , part of which I invite you to discover. on a private and personalized tour, with a maximum of five people per visit: the great Andalusian medina of Šarīš (شريش) from the 8th to the 13th centuries , with winding, narrow streets among which were located its more than twenty mosques, and which was repopulated by Christians and a hundred Jewish families from 1267.
We will begin the tour by entering the old Muslim city through the space occupied by one of the main gates of the medina: the Seville Gate, opposite the monumental cloister of the Santo Domingo convent , with remains that could belong to the Andalusian period of Jerez. From there, we will enter the beautiful and, in some cases, mysterious alleys that lead to the Jewish quarter and the six neighborhoods of the old town: San Marcos, San Juan, San Lucas, San Mateo, San Salvador and San Dionisio.
Our tour will end in the Plaza del Arenal , a space that housed an enormous maqbara or cemetery from the Andalusian period, the largest of the two it had, and which we will reach through the beautiful Pescadería street , delimited by the wall and very close to the remains that are still preserved from the old Puerta del Real or del Marmolejo.
I'll wait for you!
We will meet at Alameda Cristina, on the boulevard between palm trees in front of the door of the Jerez Centro hotel (Meliá), next to the small fountain at the horse-drawn carriage and taxi stop.
