I'm a guy who practically lived in Los Baños Philippines my whole life, from birth at a local hospital to high school. I lived a few years in Manila but came back to start a few businesses and teach at Uni. I just dabble in local history and want to share a bit of trivia of my home town - Los Baños.
A place called Maynit
This is a short historical tour of the science and nature city of Los Baños. We will explore its origin story, visit some of its historic places at the old town proper, with some blurbs about the historical background. These are
1) old munisipyo
2) old market
3) old pier
4) Agua Santa Resort
5) Immaculate Conception Parish Church
6) UP Los Baños foundation site
7) Gen. Paciano Rizal shrine
8) Los Baños municipal bath (where the tour ends)
This will be a short walk of around 1.7 km so wear comfortable shoes. Also, we will end at a dipping pool with a massage area so bring a towel and a change of clothes. (The pool has a P10/US¢18 fee for a 15 minute dip and there are masseuses with a fee of P450 or US$9/hour.) After all, our town wasn't named "The Baths" for nothing. So come on over and take a dip into our history and a literal dip into our healing hot springs!
At the steps of the old municipal hall of Los Baños. I will be using an orange dry backpack.
Site of the film "Kapag Puno na Ang Salop" by the King, Fernando Poe, Jr. It features an old style staircase with barrister atypical of old style Tagalog mansions.
A refurbished public market originally constructed in 1921. We can buy local delicacies like puto here
A resort built on the site of the old Governor General's vacation home where he relaxed in the hot spring bath of Los Baños
Entrance to the old pier site
The foundation site is the place where the first classes of the UP College of Agriculture were held. Five faculty members and 12 students, under the leadership of Dean Edwin Copeland (an American botanist and Thomasite) met here before transferring to the current campus.
Retirement home of Jose Rizal's older brother, Gen. Paciano Rizal. He was able to get the Spanish soldiers in Calamba to surrender by using firecrackers.
A dipping pool with massage area for people who want to experience the hot springs and healing energy of Los Baños
